6/5/2023 0 Comments Parasite eve super tool![]() ![]() Time is not kind to polygons, and playing this on an HD TV didn’t do it any favors. Graphically the game looks old, but that is because it is. Creepy is a much better word, and the cut-scenes do a good job of showcasing how weird this stuff is. The enemies are encountered in set areas, and there really isn’t anything definably scary about the game. Your Energy refills while in combat, and your healing abilities are quite effective at keeping Aya alive. Resident Evil this is not, so don’t worry about not fighting things or running out of ammo. The Survival-horror aspect of the game-play is less fleshed out. ![]() The downside is that without the significantly rarer Super Tool, the item is destroyed, so some careful planning is necessary. You can move stat modifiers between equipment by using Tools to make the guns you want to use more effective. The variety of different guns and armor you pick up will affect other traits, such as attack power, defense, range, and so on. As you kill things, you level up which increases your base attributes and HP total. Stats play a key role in PE, and this is where the RPG elements kick in. The enemy design is good, and most of the time you are still able to identify what sort of animal they started out as, yet be creeped out by their deformation. Once the meter is full you can shoot, use items, or use Parasite Energy to perform a special ability like healing or buffing yourself. The combat in the game takes on an Active Time Battle system where a meter fills at a speed relative to your stats. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say that there is a lot of talk about evolution, mitochondria, and spontaneous combustion.Īs you travel from area to area you will fight a host of strange mutated critters. ![]() In PE you play as Aya Brea, a member of the NYPD who happens to attend an opera the night some crazy stuff goes down. The demo disk was reason enough for some people to buy it, but the game itself was okay in its own right. Parasite Eve was originally released in 1998, and came with a demo CD featuring Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Blade 2, and Final Fantasy VIII. Is it worth checking out today, or should you let your cells evolve along a different path? 6/5/2023 0 Comments The ascension tv show![]() This sort of utter crassness pervades the whole sorry exercise.Īlso, some of the acting in these sequences is awful. A TV cop show of the quality where they try to guess the cause of a women’s death without even turning her body over. I was just reeling from the banality of that, when one character asked ‘How am I going to tell my wife her sister is dead’ and the Captain finds a uniquely personal and comforting way by telling everyone on the ship over the ship-wide speakers. Having intentionally avoided providing any science explanations, the show prefers to deliver a cheap detective show with dire dialogue instead. The only reasonable conclusion I could draw was that Ascension is either laughably dumb, or the reason we’ve been presented with this concept is equally so. How is this all possible? Ascension was ‘military’ and ‘top secret’, and therefore nobody would know, right. The old man’s son has a very current connection, despite ridiculing the suggestion. Meanwhile back on Earth an old man inspired by The Men on the Moon is the key to a student investigating Ascension, like he can do something about it when they’re trillions of miles away. So instead they came up with this sixties retro concept, where we’ve 600 mostly bitchy people heading where we don’t know, disconnected from the world they’d left on a 100 year one-way mission. My first reaction to this was that someone on the writing team loved BioShock, but Syfy baulked at creating the underwater city of Rapture. ![]() ![]() That they then use Rocket Man as the intro music is pretty ironic, because it came out in 1972 and therefore nobody on Ascension would ever have heard it. ![]() There’s an entirely superfluous coyness at the opening, when we’re introduced to some of the remarkably bland characters, before the mandatory pull-back reveal shot. Lorelei’s body lies on the beach of a pool that’s in a giant spacecraft, populated with people who never considered alternative fashions to the ones their relatives brought aboard some fifty years previously. It’s even impractical today, because we don’t have the capability to lift an aircraft carrier-sized object into space even in bits.īut before I get on to the total lack of science in this science fiction, I want to talk about what Ascension ended up as. It never happened because it was a very dumb idea and entirely impractical on numerous levels given 1963 technology. The inspiration for Ascension is a long buried plan that JFK had drawn up called Project Orion, when he worried that Nikita Khrushchev might progress at some point from kicking the tables at the UN to pushing the nuclear launch button. In Orion a ship would contain a sample of humanity to survive Armageddon, taking with them American values to a brave new world far across the cosmos. ![]() 6/5/2023 0 Comments Figleaf pose![]() ![]() Steps have been taken by regulators over the years to address some of the more egregious abuses of power. Of course, there are interest groups that try to act as countervailing forces. The scales fall from our eyes.ĪLSO READ | Lessons from the battle in Bombay House But once that thin veneer of gentility is stripped away, it allows us to glimpse the way companies really work. It is all too easy to go through the motions, tick all the corporate governance boxes on paper and even win prizes for it, as the Satyam fraud so cynically demonstrated. The other message is that corporate governance norms merely serve as a fig leaf to hide the brute reality of the exercise of power within a corporation and, through it, in society. ![]() Small shareholders can opt to vote with their feet, as they have done in the past few days. At best, company boards can aim for ‘democratic centralism’, the organizational holy grail of Leninist political parties. Notions of ‘shareholder democracy’ are fatuous. Power in a company depends upon the block of shares you control. As long as the dominant shareholders back him, there’s little to be done about it. This is not the first time an ageing patriarch refuses to go gentle into that good night, nor will it be the last. In short, Mistry is saying here that after stepping down as chairman, Ratan Tata became the eminence grise of the Tata empire.ĪLSO READ | Why Ratan Tata’s choice in Cyrus Mistry was a little too convenient That example and the manner of his sacking lend credence to Mistry’s claim of “alternative power centres without any accountability or formal responsibility". That conclusion is buttressed by Mistry’s letter, which cites an example: “once, the trust directors (Nitin Nohria and Vijay Singh) had to leave a Tata Sons board meeting in progress for almost an hour, keeping the rest of the Board waiting, in order to obtain instructions from Mr Tata". Whatever power Cyrus Mistry wielded in the past four years was on sufferance. ![]() In this case, the Tata Trusts are the dominant shareholder and Ratan Tata, as chairman of the Tata Trusts, has full control. What signals does the Tata boardroom brawl send out? The unambiguous message is that whoever controls the dominant shareholding calls the shots. Corporate governance is, at bottom, the way power is exercised over an organization. ![]() 6/5/2023 0 Comments Midnight inbox![]() Riders increasingly seek out quiet country lanes, miles away from the major thoroughfares where traffic and distracted driving has made well-traveled routes downright dangerous. Resurgence of 650b Wheelsīelive it or not, the 650b wheel is not new. And Surly equips the Midnight Special for all manner of adventure with three bottle mounts and provisions for racks, fenders, and cages. It comes in eight sizes from 40 to 64 cm. The “Hot Mayonnaise” Midnight Special is offered both as a complete bike for $1,799, or as a $625 frameset. Nonetheless, this had no impact on the ride quality, and at no point did the bike feel sluggish or slow.Īctual bike weight? I’d guess my 58-cm test bike was around 25 pounds, but who cares? The Midnight Special is not a race bike.Īnd though by all measures it looks like a white bike, Surly maintains its oddball color naming. While this imparts durability and comfort, a lightweight it is not. Speaking of weight, the Midnight Special is fabricated from burly 4130 chromoly steel, like all of Surly’s frames. By contrast, my personal bike routinely spins out and loses rear wheel traction on this segment if my weight isn’t properly distributed. I was able to consistently clean an entire switchback-laden gravel climb, lovingly dubbed the “Lung Buster,” near Minneapolis. They also provide an astounding level of grip given the wider contact patch. This lends a sense of stability and confidence in sandy corners and on fast descents. The wide 650b tires feel like they take slightly longer to accelerate up to speed, but once rolling they hold velocity and feel extremely planted. Over 10 hours, I rode the Midnight Special during for approximately 150 miles during fast road rides and on a mixture of surfaces. Thru-axles hold both front and rear wheels firmly in place, and flat-mount disc brakes keep things cool and under control when the speed ramps up. Sans fenders, the Midnight Special will even accept up to 27.5-by-2.35-inch tires for more of an off-road feel. The stock WTB Horizon 650-by-42 tires more than live up to Surly’s “FFF: Fatties Fit Fine” mantra. The Midnight Special is Surly’s evolution of its Pacer road bike, itself an underrated performer. In their place is a more comfortable and robust 650b/27.5” (aka “road plus”) wheel size.Īnd today Surly Bikes, no stranger to alternate/odd wheel sizes, launched its latest road bike, the Midnight Special – complete with, you guessed it, 650b wheels. Outside the realm of the pro peloton, those skinny, jarring, high-pressure 23c racing tires are becoming a thing of the past. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a road bike revolution going on in the cycling world. We crammed more than 100 miles aboard the Midnight Special for a First Look review. Surly, a brand never known for staying close to the center line, just released a new “road-plus” bike. ![]() 6/5/2023 0 Comments Plant a seed mitoza![]() ![]() Jen has dedicated her life to the spiritual path of plant work. She is the Founder of Heart Springs Sanctuary, where she helps people deepen their connection with nature through plant communication. Jen Frey is a Healer, Mentor, Earth Advocate and Voice of the Plants. For let’s not forget that seeds also have a mythical life. I am learning that the more we can recognize the preciousness and sacredness of seeds and other beings, the easier it becomes to recognize the sacred within ourselves. From this very tiny being, comes the great Oak. For if one needs proof of miracles, look at the precious acorn. I prefer to live in a world where the Sacred in all things is honored, even in the tiny beings of Seeds. But I prefer to live in a world that is filled with the different colors, smells, and tastes of biodiversity. Maybe we can live in a sterile, monotone world. Thank goodness for this, for our very life is dependent on our seeds. How special the unique qualities of biodiversity. They are remembering the preciousness of each seed. What is the special quality of these seeds? They can handle the large amounts of pesticides needed to grow them.įortunately, there is a growing number of farmers, gardeners, consumers, and seed companies who refuse to accept this. Now, if the large seed companies have their way, everyone, no matter the region, will grow the same seeds. As this practice continued, families and regions amassed the seeds that fit their environment and desires. Seeds were collected from a plant with the quality that was most desired maybe this particular plant weathered the drought or maybe the flavor of the fruit was sweeter. As I said, the best seed was harvested and saved. It was once a source of pride to have unique tomatoes or corn. ![]() Along with this is the desire for monoculture and the loss of the great biodiversity of seeds. Companies, such as Monsanto, are trying to obtain a seed monopoly. They knew their survival was based on the seeds. There are stories of people being forced to leave their homeland under harsh conditions, unable to take their belongings, and yet, they grabbed their seeds. We can trace who brought the seeds and plants to new lands, which hints at the importance of certain plants for different cultures. We knew that wherever we landed, we could grow our food. ![]() If we had seeds, we could carry our food with us. Rocio Alarcon says thousands of years ago, seeds were the passports. Not only did saving seeds portend survival, they also allowed for freedom. They, of course, saved the best seeds to plant the following year. A shortage of food could cause starvation and death. Our ancestors planted their seeds, hoped for a good harvest year, and saved all that they could to feed them throughout the winter. We can buy nearly any kind of food that we desire at almost any time of year. In our abundant, global society, it is often easy to forget the incredible importance of seeds. ![]() ![]() ![]() To show you what I mean, here’s a PVC pipe laid at the 21″ mark.Īs you can see, the junction box isn’t in the way and the cables can easily be moved out of the way.ĭecide how wide to make your stand. At that width, my panel’s junction box and cables won’t get in the way. I ended up deciding to make my stand 21″ wide (indicated by the pencil). (If you’re junction box isn’t in the way this won’t be a consideration for you.) The main consideration here for me was to make sure the panel’s cables and junction box wouldn’t get in the way when I collapsed the legs. You’ll likely get a different number if you have a different panel or choose to mount yours vertically. I decided to mount mine horizontally because my panel’s junction box and cables would get in the way of the stand if mounted vertically.įind the crossbar length by measuring the distance between the inside of the frame from one side to the other. Crossbar Lengthĭecide whether you want your solar panel to stand horizontally or vertically. Once we know these measurements, we can find the length of all the individual pieces of PVC. We need to find the following dimensions: For instance, my 1/2″ PVC pipe is about 13/16″ in diameter. Tip: PVC sizes refer to the diameter of the pipe’s hole. My panel’s gap is just under 1″ tall, so I decided to use 1/2″ PVC for the crossbar and 3/4″ PVC for the legs, base, and joints. Use this number to determine the thickness of the PVC pipes and length of the self-drilling screws you use. Measure the gap between the frame’s rim and the back of the panel. ![]() Now let’s get building! Step 2: Measure the Gap of Your Solar Panel’s Frameįlip your solar panel over. (Don’t worry, I’ll show you how to find all the measurements.) The dimensions for all the sections of PVC need to be customized for your specific panel. This allows the tee joints to slide back and forth across it freely. Note that the crossbar is a thinner pipe than all the others. The crossbar is then attached to the panel with self-drilling screws. The sections are all connected together with PVC tee and elbow joints. Here’s the design for the stand we’ll be building: 3/4″ PVC for legs, base, and support beam.Follow Step 2 and Step 3 to find the right sizes for your panel. Note: I’ve listed the sizes I used for my specific panel, a 100 watt HQST solar panel. What’s more, this homemade stand is adjustable, portable, and easy to build. Store-bought solar panel stands and mounts regularly cost five times as much. I recently built a DIY solar panel stand that cost me just $11. ![]() ![]() Partition Manager provides hard disk storage organization and optimization. New!
